Jiggling the Key? 5 Warning Signs Your Lock is About to Die (And How to Fix It)

We have all been there. You put the key in the door, but it doesn’t turn. So you pull it back a little, wiggle it left and right, hold your breath, and… click. It opens.

You might think you just have the “magic touch.” But at Locksmith Plus, we know the truth: Your lock is crying for help.

Locks are mechanical engines. They work hard every single day, battling the New York humidity, freezing winters, and daily wear and tear. If you ignore these small signs, you will eventually find yourself locked out.

Here are the 5 most common problems we see in Queens and Long Island, and exactly what to do about them.

1. The "Frozen" Cylinder (Key Won't Turn)

The Problem: You insert the key, but it feels like it hit a wall. It just won’t twist.

Why it happens: Usually, it is dirt, grime, or a dried-out mechanism.

The Fix:

  • DO NOT force it. You will break the key (see point #3).

  • DO NOT use WD-40. This is the biggest mistake people make! WD-40 attracts dust and turns into sticky mud inside your lock.

  • DO use: Graphite spray or a Teflon-based lubricant. Spray a little inside, wiggle the key gently, and it should release.

2. The "Wobbly" Handle

The Problem:
The door handle feels loose in your hand, or it hangs down like a sad plant.

Why it happens:
The screws connecting the two sides of the handle have loosened up over time.

The Fix: Look for the mounting screws (usually on the inside of the door) and tighten them. If the handle still droops, the internal spring is broken, and it is time for a replacement.

3. The Nightmare: Broken Key Inside the Lock

The Problem: You turned too hard, and now you are holding half a key. The other half is stuck inside.

The Fix:

  • Take a deep breath.

  • Don’t try to dig it out with pliers or a screwdriver unless a piece is sticking out clearly. Pushing tools inside usually pushes the broken key deeper.

  • Call a Pro: We have special extraction tools that pull the broken piece out like a magnet, saving the lock so you don’t have to drill it.

4. The Misaligned Door (It Won't Latch)

The Problem: You have to push, pull, or lift the door handle aggressively just to get the deadbolt to lock.

Why it happens: Houses settle. Plus, in New York, the extreme change from hot summers to freezing winters causes door frames to expand and contract.

The Fix: This isn’t actually a lock problem; it is a door problem. Often, adjusting the strike plate (the metal hole on the frame) by just a few millimeters solves everything.

5. The "Jiggle" Dance

The Problem: The key works, but only if you play with it for 10 seconds.

Why it happens: Your key is worn down (looks like a smooth knife instead of jagged teeth), or the pins inside the lock are worn out.

The Fix: Stop using that key immediately. It is about to stop working forever. Call us to rekey the cylinder or cut a fresh code-cut key that works perfectly.

💡 Locksmith Plus Pro Tip: The “Yearly Spray”

Pick a date (maybe when you change the clocks for Daylight Savings). Take a can of Graphite Lubricant and spray a tiny puff into every keyhole in your house and car. This 5-second action can add 5 years to the life of your locks.
